What is Ketosis.

What is Ketosis.

On your LCHF (Low carb, High Fat) journey, this is a BIG word you will keep hearing.

What is it? And what does it do!!

In a normal course of the day, our body needs energy to carry out the day to day activities. We tap into our glucose to meet these needs. You eat your food, body converts it into glucose and that is consumed to meet the daily requirements. BAU (Business as usual).

Ketosis is the science of changing this body habit. When you are on a KETO diet or even a LCHF, you essentially starve the body of glucose. Desperate to provide for the needs of the body, our body starts using and depleting the stored glucose. (our body stores excess glucose in liver) And once even the stored resources are fully depleted, it is forced to meet its energy needs by burning fat.

You are said to be “on ketosis” when your body is no longer burning sugar (glucose) for its energy needs. Instead, it is burning the fat.

This is the technical definition; practically it is a whole different way of life. You are a changed person if you are on ketosis. Simply put, it is a better and more efficient way of running the body machine. You feel high (on energy), lethargy goes out of the window (no need for afternoon naps, no feeling of fatigue, no hunger pangs)

Of every 100 people you see and meet, it is safe to assume that 99 of them are NOT on ketosis and are running their body on glucose. That 01 person would stand out in terms of his physique, his energy levels and overall lack of bad lipids.

On a serious side, you start your journey of diabetes remission and cure yourself of Insulin resistance.

Latest research is showing substantial positives for whole lot of ailments, right from Alzheimer to even cancer.

It is a documented fact that children suffering from epilepsy, when put on a keto diet show exponential improvements.

It is known go-to diet for people suffering from metabolic syndrome.

It is a known way to lose weight successfully without feeling hungry all the time.

A word of caution

Ketosis vs. Ketoacidosis

If you are a type 1 diabetic, you need to be extra careful.

Ketosis can become dangerous when ketones build up along with high sugar. High levels lead to dehydration and change the chemical balance of your blood. It becomes acidic and can cause coma.

This is called Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) It is a serious complication of type 1 diabetes and, much less commonly, of type 2 diabetes. DKA happens when your blood sugar is very high and acidic substances called ketones build up to dangerous levels in your body.

This is rare for a type 2 diabetic as our body makes insulin. Type 1 diabetic, for this reason, CAN NEVER get OFF medication.

In any event, if you feel the following symptoms while on a keto diet, STOP immediately and consult your physician.

Symptoms you should not ignore:

  • frequent urination
  • extreme thirst
  • high blood sugar levels
  • nausea or vomiting
  • abdominal pain
  • confusion
  • a flushed face
  • fatigue
  • rapid breathing

AGAIN. KETOSIS and KETOACIDOSES are 02 different things.

Ketosis is a wonderful thing, KETOACIDOSES is a dangerous disease usually in type 1 diabetics if they miss insulin, but can happen in type 2 rarely)

How do you check.

You can get a simple blood test to detect the level of ketones in your blood. You can use the level of ketones to determine if you have ketosis or DKA.

You may also be able to take a urine test at home. For this test, you’ll place a dipstick into a clean catch of your urine. It will change colors based on the level of ketones in your urine.

< 0.6 You are burning Glucose.

>0.6 Start of ketosis.

> 0.6 but less than 3: Nutritional ketosis

>3 but less than 5: Starvation Ketosis.

> 5. If accompanied with high blood sugar (STOP and hospitalized)

>5 but controlled sugar.(you are doing fine)

Blood ketone tests are a best way to check if you are on track as they measure the levels of beta-hydroxybutyric acid, the primary ketone involved in ketoacidosis. Check out our tie-up with Thyrocare to see discounted rates.

My personal view on the subject:  It is practically impossible to sustain on this diet. It is TOUGH and it is boring.  Easier and much more effective way to reach the same goal is FASTING, I covered that in detail here.

Here I leave you with a video of Tim ferris talking about the same conclusion.
